Kuramata was a Japanese designer influential in interior, furniture, and product design. Born in Tokyo in 1934, Kuramata studied furniture and interior design at the Tokyo High School of Industrial Art and the Kuwasawa Design Institute. He began his career at San-ai, designing interiors and furniture for the company’s shops including the San-ai Dream Centre in Ginza. Then after working for a brief period at Matsuya, in 1965, he established his own firm, the Kuramata Design Office.
